Tour Description

A journey back in time through the history of Buda Castle and the Old Town

“There are three wonderful cities in the world: on the plain is Florence, on the waters, Venice, and on the hills, Budda…” This is how they spoke of Buda Castle District during the European Renaissance. Although the city has changed greatly over the centuries, it still retains an unmistakable charm that continues to captivate all who visit it, so much that it earned recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This free tour of Buda will take you to explore the Castle District from end to end, with a comprehensive guide to its history and most iconic monuments. We’ll begin at KM 0 at the foot of the Buda hills, where I’ll explain the origins of this fascinating city. From there, we’ll see the iconic Chain Bridge (Széchenyi lánchíd), the oldest bridge in the Hungarian capital, which connects Buda and Pest, and remains one of the most symbolic landmarks of the city.

Explore the Buda Castle District

Next, we’ll enter the Castle Garden Bazaar, the former royal gardens. Here, you’ll get a glimpse of the ancient city walls, which have witnessed centuries of history. From this point, we’ll head to the Statue of Eugene of Savoy, where the terrace provides a splendid view of the Danube River.

On this free tour, you’ll see the majestic Royal Palace, a symbol of Hungarian royal power for centuries. We’ll continue to the Matthias Corvinus Fountain. Don’t miss the Buda Funicular, a unique way to reach the Buda Hills and take in the breathtaking views.

Our next destination will be the Hungarian Presidential Palace, the official residence of the nation’s president, known for its impressive architecture. Afterward, we’ll walk through Disz Tér, one of the most elegant squares in the area, and learn about András Hadik, the Hungarian military hero commemorated with a statue in this square.

Enjoy Budapest’s most iconic sights and monuments

We’ll stroll through the panoramic views of the Buda Hills, where you can capture some of the best photos of Budapest. We’ll take you to the Tower of Mary Magdalene, one of the oldest buildings in the neighborhood. We’ll also visit the Vienna Gate, an ancient city entrance offering a fascinating glimpse into Budapest’s medieval past.

The Holy Trinity Square will be another highlight, a site of great religious importance to the city. Finally, we’ll explore Matthias Church, one of Budapest’s most significant monuments, and the Fisherman’s Bastion, where you’ll enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the city and the Danube River.
