Tour Description

A journey of contrasts: from the Holocaust to the present of Budapest’s nightlife

On March 19, 1944, the German Nazis invaded Hungary… but wait a minute, did they invade? With us, you’ll discover what really happened.

We’ll take you on a free tour of about two hours through what was the last ghetto created by the Nazis during World War II. If you walk through the Jewish Quarter on your own, you won’t recognize many corners of the Jewish ghetto that once stretched across its streets, a real concentration camp in the heart of the city.

The legacy of World War II and the Holocaust in Budapest

We’ll start our tour with the imposing Great Synagogue of Budapest, the largest synagogue in Europe. Here, we’ll share its history and significance to the Jewish community and explain how it survived the horrors of World War II.

Just a few steps away, we’ll visit the Jewish Cemetery, where the mass graves of World War II victims lie. Here, we’ll honor those who were killed during the brutality of the war, and discuss the fight for survival during the Nazi occupation.

Don’t miss the Tree of Life, a moving Holocaust memorial engraved with the names of those who lost their lives in concentration camps.

Explore the Jewish Quarter: its history and living memory

Next, we’ll explore some of the neighborhood’s street murals, offering a unique look at urban art and how the city has transformed this historical place into a vibrant space full of life and creativity.

We’ll visit the Monument to the Righteous Among the Nations, a tribute to the heroes who risked their lives to save thousands of Jews during World War II, fighting against both the Nazis and the Hungarian far-right.

The tour will also take you to the lively Gozsdu Court, the epicenter of bars and nightlife in the area. It’s now a gathering place for young locals and tourists, all enjoying the unique atmosphere of Budapest.

From the past of World War II and the holocaust to the present of Budapest’s nightlife

We’ll also visit the Rumbach Synagogue, an old synagogue now turned into a museum, reflecting the history of Budapest’s Jewish community. Then, we’ll head to the Orthodox Synagogue, the most significant for the Orthodox Jewish community in Budapest.

We can’t forget the remains of the Ghetto wall, the last vestiges of Budapest’s former ghetto, which still stand as a poignant reminder of the suffering Jews endured during the Nazi occupation.

Finally, we’ll wrap up the tour at Szimpla Kert, one of Budapest’s famous ruin bars. This iconic spot represents the vibrant nightlife of the district, while also serving as a point of reflection on how the city has risen from the ashes of its past.
