The first Sunday of Advent arrives, and with it, the streets of Budapest fill with the Christmas spirit that will accompany us until the end of the year.

This year, the Christmas markets begin on November 14, 2025, marking the official start of the holiday season in the city and continuing until early January 2026.

Christmas markets, along with the city’s ice-skating rinks, are among the biggest attractions in Budapest during December. Below, we’ll show you where to find them and how to make the most of your visit during these festive weeks.

The Most Iconic Christmas Markets in Budapest

The Christmas Market at Vörösmarty Square

From November 14 to December 31, 2025, you can enjoy the classic Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market, the oldest in Budapest and organized by the City Municipality. It’s one of the city’s most visited holiday spots, known for its warm atmosphere, handcrafted gifts, and delicious local food.

You’ll find wooden stalls filled with crafts, decorations, ceramics, and traditional textiles, as well as Hungarian specialties like lángos, goulash, stuffed cabbage, and the famous kürtőskalács (chimney cake), best enjoyed with a cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate.

During Advent, the market hosts free concerts with folk, jazz, and world music, plus the lighting of the city’s Advent wreath every Sunday at 4:00 PM. Children can enjoy the small Christmas train, open from November 15 to December 28, and even meet Santa Claus on December 6.

Vörösmarty Square is located in the heart of the city, on the Pest side, just a short walk from Deák Ferenc Square and the Chain Bridge. You can also reach it via Metro Line 1 (M1), stopping at Vörösmarty tér — the final stop on the yellow line.

At the foot of St. Stephen’s Basilica (Szent István Bazilika), you’ll find one of Europe’s most beautiful and award-winning Christmas markets, voted Best Christmas Market in Europe 2024.

There are also Advent concerts every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 5:00 PM, creating a magical atmosphere surrounded by festive lights and the giant Christmas tree.
